Wow. It’s incredible that you are reading Issue One of Exposed Brick Literary Magazine! This has been a dream of ours for years, but more specifically since November 9th, 2019. We’ve encountered every barrier, from lack of funding and folks reminding us that print is dying, to a global pandemic and a political revolution. However, we've also experienced every success, a community that believes in us, artists who trust us with their creations, a team with a passion for the work, and a historical moment that reminds us why this work is needed.

A poem may not outline the policies we need to see our community succeed. A photograph might not bring in the money we need to fund programs or stop real violence from happening. Yet art inspires like nothing else. It helps us remember our values and can even change the way we see the world. The work of an artist is to process the world we live in and create room to envision a different future.

The work in this first issue is our offering to the world in a time when we are all trying to figure out our roles in the world that is emerging before us. Before 2020, we believed our voices were integral to the world. Now, more than ever, we are proud to have created this platform with your help. In the words of Toni Cade Bambara, the job of the writer is to make the revolution irresistible. We offer this publication in service of that mission for our community. May this art comfort you and help you imagine a world where we are all free.

With love,
